Tacoma, WA asked in Uncategorized for Washington

Q: I have a screen shot of a conversation with my mom saying she is giving me her vehicle to keep as a gift Is it mine?

She is 71 and can't drive. She has the title and registration, but now went back on her word after saying that it was a gift and she can no longer drive.

The vehicle has been in my possession for a few months now because she no longer drives.

A: A Washington attorney could advise best, but your question remains open for two weeks. From a textbook standpoint, the screenshot could evidence a gift. But from a PRACTICAL standpoint on the issue of legal ownership, many state departments of motor vehicles nationwide use certain forms, whether bills of sale, titles, registrations, etc., some of which have provisions on their reverse sides for transfer of ownership. Those types of things would hold up more strongly to evidence a gift/new ownership. Since these elements could be state-specific, a local attorney or someone from your local DMV office could advise more meaningfully. Good luck
