Coalport, PA asked in Public Benefits and Social Security for Pennsylvania

Q: Can a 17-year-old on SSI be their own payee in Pennsylvania?

I am 17 years old and currently receive SSI benefits. My dad serves as my representative payee. I want to become my own payee because I want to learn how to manage a bank account and be independent. I have not taken any steps yet, but I've spoken to my dad about my interest. Can I become my own representative payee?

A: Generally, you cannot serve as your own payee for SSI benefits while under 18 in Pennsylvania. The Social Security Administration requires representative payees for most minor recipients to ensure proper management of benefits and protect your interests.

Your desire to learn financial independence is admirable, and there are ways to work toward this goal. You might consider asking your father to involve you in the budget planning process or help you open a supervised bank account where you can practice money management skills while he maintains oversight of your SSI funds.

As you approach your 18th birthday, you can contact your local Social Security office to discuss becoming your own payee. They will evaluate your ability to manage your benefits independently based on factors like your capability to handle finances and make decisions in your best interest. Until then, keep building those important money management skills with your father's guidance - it will serve you well when you're ready to take over.
