Mechanicsburg, PA asked in Traffic Tickets for Pennsylvania

Q: Concerns about points on license due to a traffic violation and options to reduce them in Pennsylvania.

I received a traffic ticket for violating a "no left turn" sign and aggressive driving while exiting the Costco parking lot in Harrisburg, PA. I understand my mistake and plan to pay the fine, but I'm concerned about getting additional points on my license because I already have 3 points. What options do I have to avoid receiving more points, and is it possible to attend a traffic school or defensive driving course to reduce the points?

A: I understand your concern—traffic violations can feel like more than just a fine when you're already carrying points on your record. In Pennsylvania, a violation for ignoring a traffic control device, like a "no left turn" sign, typically carries 2 points, and aggressive driving could add more, depending on how it’s cited. Since you already have 3 points, adding more could push you closer to the threshold where PennDOT might require a written exam or other penalties.

Before paying the fine, consider reaching out to the local traffic court listed on your ticket to ask about options like pleading to a lesser offense or requesting a hearing. Sometimes, judges or prosecutors will agree to reduce the charge or allow you to plead to a no-point violation, especially if you have a relatively clean record and are respectful in your approach. Pennsylvania doesn't have a formal program where you can automatically take a defensive driving course to remove points, but the court may allow such a course as part of a negotiated resolution.

Also, PennDOT will remove 3 points from your record for every 12 months you go without a new violation, so keeping your record clean going forward will help. You're taking the right approach by being proactive about this and looking at your options before simply paying the fine. With the right steps, you may be able to avoid the points and protect your driving record.
