Q: Seeking spousal support in Georgia divorce

I am going through a divorce, and my wife filed for divorce a year ago. We have been living in our home for 19 years, and she is taking our 5,000-square-foot house and all the items inside. According to the divorce papers, we are supposed to divide the equity in the house, but I discovered she has taken equity out of the home without informing me. We had a mediation in July, but she is not being reasonable and is trying to leave me with nothing. I'm seeking spousal support since I am struggling financially; the mortgage for our home is $1,400 a month, and I am paying over $2,000, but my salary is now in jeopardy because she makes more than double my salary. I don't have shared debts, and we haven't been able to negotiate spousal support. Without a lawyer, what would be the proper way to ask for spousal support?

A: Alimony is very specific to each case. You have to need it and she has to have the ability to pay it. You need to have a consultation with an attorney to review the financials in the case and give you advice. You have to formally ask for divorce in proper court filings in order to have a chance to get it.
