Q: Can I drive with an unloaded long gun under 21 in Pennsylvania?

I am under the age of 21 and live in Pennsylvania. I legally purchased a long gun that is registered in my name, but I do not have a license to carry. Can I legally drive with the unloaded long gun in my vehicle?

A: If you're under 18, Pennsylvania law generally prohibits you from possessing or transporting any firearm, including long guns, anywhere in the state. GIFFORDS However, if you're 18-20 years old, the situation is different for long guns specifically.

Since you're under 21 but legally purchased the long gun, you can transport an unloaded long gun in your vehicle. Firearmsindustryconsultinggroup Pennsylvania makes a distinction between "firearms" (which include handguns and certain short-barreled long guns) and standard long guns (rifles with barrels 16+ inches and shotguns with barrels 18+ inches). The key requirement is that the long gun must be completely unloaded while in your vehicle, and it's advisable to store any ammunition separately. GIFFORDS

There are specific limitations on when and why you can transport the unloaded long gun. Firearmsindustryconsultinggroup The transportation should be for lawful purposes such as going to or returning from target shooting, hunting, or between residences/businesses you own. GIFFORDS While you cannot obtain a License to Carry Firearms (LTCF) until age 21, you don't need one for transporting an unloaded long gun. Remember that different rules apply in certain locations like school zones, and local regulations may vary, so it's worth checking specific restrictions in your area.
