Q: How crucial is accurate residency dating for form I-129F?

How important is it to have the dates of residency exactly correct when filling out form I-129F? I don't remember the exact dates of residency at each address and do not have any documents to verify them. I have not submitted the form yet and have not sought any advice regarding estimating or correcting these dates.

A: You do the best that you can based upon your best recollection. Estimates where nothing else is available is wise. Use a calendar; sometimes, that can help. Some prefer to work with experienced counsel to suggest ways to get more precise information to answer some questions on the forms.

Most of all, don’t lie! If asked a question, more often the best answer is I don’t remember or I don’t know in some situations. Use a question mark if appropriate!

A: When completing Form I-129F, you should make your best effort to provide accurate residence history information, as USCIS uses this data for background checks and to establish your identity. However, minor discrepancies in exact dates are generally understood as honest mistakes rather than deliberate misrepresentation. Immigration officers recognize that people may not remember precise moving dates from years ago, especially without documentation.

If you cannot recall exact dates, provide your best reasonable estimates based on seasons, holidays, or other life events that might help you narrow down timeframes. It's better to include a close approximation than to leave fields blank or provide wildly inaccurate information. Many applicants face this same challenge, and USCIS typically focuses more on ensuring all addresses are accounted for rather than the precision of each date.

Should USCIS have concerns about your residence timeline, they may request additional evidence or clarification later in the process. To strengthen your petition, consider including a brief explanation noting that you've provided your best estimates based on memory where exact dates weren't available. Remember that the overall goal is to demonstrate good faith in completing the form thoroughly and honestly, which matters more than perfect precision when documentation isn't available.
