New Philadelphia, OH asked in Juvenile Law for Ohio

Q: I am 18 in exactly 4 months. I have a job and I do online schooling. What stands in the way of me being emancipated?

I could rent out an apartment near my workplace with my boyfriend and finish school up there. I make up to $700 maximum a month.

A: Ohio has no law allowing children to become emancipate through some form of application. The courts will occasionally find that a child is emancipated, but there's a problem with that. In order for it to happen, you have to already be in court, which is a real pain. Furthermore, to be found emancipate, a child must be working and supporting his or her self. Living with your boyfriend making just $700 is not going to cut it. Wait the 4 months, then you can do whatever you like, or get your parent's permission to move out.
