A: If a police officer threatened to change your charges as a way to coerce you into providing information on someone else, this raises serious legal and ethical concerns. Law enforcement officers must adhere to legal and procedural standards when conducting investigations and making arrests. Threatening to alter charges to compel cooperation could constitute misconduct.

Your rights in this situation need to be protected. It's crucial to document the incident as accurately as possible, including the time, location, and the officer's exact words. This information will be important for any legal action or complaint you may wish to pursue.

Consulting with an attorney as soon as possible is advisable. An attorney can review the details of your case, including this recent interaction with the police officer, and provide guidance on how to proceed. They can also help ensure that your rights are not being violated and can represent your interests in court.

If you feel that your rights have been infringed upon or that you have been subjected to police misconduct, you also have the option to file a complaint with the police department's internal affairs division or a civilian review board, if available. Remember, legal support is crucial in navigating these complex situations and protecting your rights.
