Greeneville, TN asked in Employment Law for Tennessee

Q: can an employer make an employee pay for parts that the employee neglectfully ruined when repairing a vehicle?

an employee did a brake job including bearings and races on a trailer. He neglected to do the job correctly, the vehicle left and the brakes, bearings, and seals were ruined because he was not careful and tightened them too tight thus causing them all to burn up. He was instructed specifically how to do this in training and he neglected to check over his work and then had to be sent 4 hours away to do the job AGAIN. It cost the company over $1000 for the job that paid only $1200 in the first place. Can the employee be held responsible for any of this?
