Lawrence, MA asked in Consumer Law and Construction Law for New Hampshire

Q: How can I get my money back?

I hired a contractor to build an addition on my house, the parts he built were structurally unsafe and he caused more damage to my property (it rained and he never covered my roof so it poured in my house for 4 days, he told me "its too much of a hassle to tarp the roof"). He said he had $11,000 left form the money I had paid him but he has not returned it yet and I asked for that and then some more back since I had to tear down almost everything he did and repair other things. He was advertised as an LLC and insured but he is not in good standing as an LLC and I cannot find his insurance. Can I sue him for what he owes me and if he files bankruptcy put a lien on his house since his LLC is not in good standing? I brought up multiple things that were wrong to him over the last few weeks and he told me he would fix them but never did, instead he covered them up.
