Q: A week ago, I was served a summons to appear in court. What happens if I fail to respond at all?
My fiance's ex wife has filed a personal injury suit against me. She claims I broke up their marriage. I just moved to Ohio and I am about to start a new job. I really don't have time to deal with this. Also, if it comes down to it, will I be forced to reveal my financial assets? What if I simply don't respond? This suit against me was filed in the state of Mississippi. It will be quite an embarrassment if my colleagues hear about this.
A: you need to get a lawyer in mississippi and timely respond. if you do not she will take a default judgment against you. she will then have that judgment domesticated in ohio or wherever you have assets or earnings and then attach those. DEFINITELY do not ignore it.
