Q: In 1956-1958 The court ordered my Mother to the state Hospital in Modesto, Ca for two years because of a brain injury?
My mother was taken away from her 3 kids for two years and put in a state hospital for the insane. She was ordered by the court after an auto accident where she was thrown out of the car and hit the curb. The mayor's son ran a stop sign and hit my Mom and brother. She suited him but was put in the hospital for 2 years before she could go to court. My doctor said that this was a lie we had been told all these years THAT NO ONE HAD THE RIGHT TO SEND A PERSON TO THE STATE HOSPITAL JUST BECAUSE OF A HEAD INJURY. Could you please tell me if my life with my Mother is all a lie. All three of her children were told the same story. thank you
A: i am sorry for the loss you and your siblings suffered. brain injuries from car accidents unfortunately are more common than one would think and range from "mild" to very disabling. the world was a different place back in the 50s (i was born in 1950). brain injuries as well as many psychological conditions were not as well understood and treated as today and today probably not as well as tomorrow. I don't know if your mom's history is true or not but it is certainly very possible. you might be able to get her records. you may have to open an estate for her and be appointed administrator to do so ( i am assuming she has passed). your doctor's comment may be well meaning but could have been taken out of context. good luck in having peace.
