Q: Are mandatory school activities legal on Sundays if given only an 18 hour notice.
My band director called on a Saturday at 2:30pm to inform me that there will be a rehearsal that will take up most of the following day. I also have other commitments I have made prior to this phone call. If I did not go to this, I would receive a lower grade, miss out on future band related opportunities, and possibly get some kind of punishment. This is clearly unfair and I'm now wondering if it is legal.
A: I'm not aware of any law the band director would be violating here, but the school likely has a host of administrative rules that may have been broken. I would take this matter up with the principle and/or school board. I suspect they will agree this is not fair.
