Helena, GA asked in Personal Injury for South Carolina

Q: If someone enters my house without me knowing and my dog bites them, am I liable?

I am being asked to pay for a persons medical bills (over $400) after the person let himself in to my home and was bitten on the neck by my dog. I agreed to pay until they showed me the doctor bill which doesnt show whether their insurance paid for anything or not. It's just a quickly written up receipt from a clinic. I declined to pay it until I received a real statement and they threatened to take me to court. His dad works for the courts so I am not sure what they have up their sleeve, apparently they think they can win?

I knew he would eventually be over but not an exact time nor did I tell him to just let himself in.

He was warned ahead of time that the dog in the house was "aggressive" although it is not an accurate word, he is protective. There is a baby in the house and the dog is not aggressive around her.

The dog actually isn't mine but I was left him while the owner is out of state, the owner tells me he is not responsible because the dog is in my care

A: You can ask your homeowner's insurance to handle it.
