Q: How do I get rid of a tax lien on my personal property in Missouri for State income Tax?
The State of Missouri put a tax lien on my personal property for unpaid income tax for the 2001 and 2002 tax years. The lien amount is approximately $50,000 and was filed in 2004. I recently learned that it is still in effect. I thought that such liens expired after 10 years if not renewed. To my knowledge, it was never renewed, and yet it still exists. I asked the clerk at the courthouse about it and she said that it will never expire. Is she correct? If not, when will this lien expire?
My husband and I want to sell our home. It is a big, old house in very, very poor condition, and I have many medical problems. But if the state takes $50,000 out of the sale, then there will be nothing left for us to get a smaller home.
A: These are not just basic legal questions, but questions that require careful though and consideration, as well as knowledge of the facts and the law, and specifically tailored legal advice. You get that when you hire an attorney.
