Q: Csn I get Culver City to allow me to put toilet in the garage of my rental at my own expense based on disability?
I'm 78 and have Interstitial Cystitis and other bladder issues that compel me to go to the toilet every 1-2 hours. There are 14 steps up to the second floor of my unit, where the bathroom is. There is a law in Culver City that prohibits use of a garage for a toilet unless there are 2 other parking spaces for the tenant. My garage was built in 1927 and can't accomodate a car, and there is washer and dryer in the garage. Other units have bathrooms on the first floor which was probably okayed before the rule was passed. There are 12 almost identical units, and most have bathrooms on the first floor constructed by modifying the garage. On the basis of age and special needs, Culver City should make an exception. It would be very difficult for me to move.
A: You can request a variance or a reasonable accommodation under the ADA. It's an approval process that you can apply for with the planning department.
