Q: is it disrespectful to go to human resources director about other job opportunities as a temp without telling your boss?
I was at a financial company as a temp in the customer service department. I went to the HR director for other job opportunities and they sent me to a manager in the underwriting department. That manager wanted to interview me right there so I took the chance. This happened during my work hours. I didn't tell my manager at the customer service department because I didn't think it was necessary and I was looking out for myself. However, I had no idea this was considered out of the protocol. I went back to my desk to look for my customer service boss but she stepped away from her desk so I sent her an email that I was at an interview in another department. She found out about all of this and flipped out on me saying I was unprofessional and disrespectful and fired me right then and there. She also emailed my recruiter telling him what I did and stating I will not be a good fit in her department. What do you think about about of this? I have no idea this was wrong.
A:
I am sorry to hear about your situation. As long as you were not discriminated against for being in a protected class such as age or race, or have a contract, it does not sound like you will be able to win. Being an at-will employee you can basically be fired for any reason as long it is not breaking the law including your boss not liking your behavior of interviewing in other departments without telling her.
