Q: What kind of video / other evidence is necessary to successfully report reckless drivers?
Is it worth it to take dash cam video of drivers speeding, running red lights, driving recklessly, etc, and turning that video into police to have said person successfully cited? The idea is to have safe drivers report dangerous drivers. Perhaps something like this could send a message to drivers that just because a police car is not around, doesn't mean they can use the road like it's their own personal raceway. What would all be necessary for this to succeed? Video of the action (speeding, running red light, general reckless driving), license plate number, proof of speeding (my speed + radar gun reading), other? The reason I ask is because I feel strongly about this subject. Dangerous drivers are putting other peoples' lives at risk. Roads can be made safer.
A: Lobby your municipality to have more intersection cams. However understand, intersection cams are expensive because of the significant storage that is required, and then staff to monitor, review, and erase or save. Beyond that, intersection cams don't prove speeding--nor would a dash cam. Generally, citizen advocacy gets police to patrol speeder areas. Doing it yourself won't help because your reading on your machine won't be admissable in court; likewise any video/cam won't be admissable. Work with groups like MADD who have been at this.
