Pawtucket, RI asked in Family Law for Rhode Island

Q: dcyf took my children after we got into a car accident and charged me with abuse, what can i do?

Boys are with a family member. They're 18, 16, and 11. What happens if I just let dcyf keep control of the situation and move out of state? I got into a car accident and the kids were in the car with me, I don't feel like it's fair that I now have to fight dcyf to get my kids back. My kids said they're afraid of me because of the accident and because I have anxiety and needed medication I wasn't taking (which I am now) so I'm also not feeling much like fighting for any of it. Ideally for me, I'd like to move away and help my brother financially until my kids are old enough to stop blaming me for getting into an accident and live on their own.

A: If you do not wish to contest the case and leave the state and disregard the recommendations of DCYF, the court, and the case workers, there is a chance they will deem you an unfit parent, and terminate your parental rights. Meet with your court appointed attorney and discuss your options confidentially in a private setting.
