West Hartford, CT asked in Immigration Law for Virginia

Q: What are my options to get residency and subsequently citizenship

Hi I came to the United States in 2005 on a F-1 student visa. I got married to a united states citizen in 2009. We lived together for about a year before we started having marital problems. I left SC & moved to VA but never filed for divorce &she did not either. During the time we had problems I lost my passport &documents but I still have a photocopy of my then drivers license and SS number print out from the SS office. We just got back in contact and I want to know if I can file for residency with or without her. And what are my options since I lost my passport with original visa in it. I moved from Nigeria and have not gotten into any trouble except for some traffic violations. We are on sort of good terms and she is in a tough financial position with a young daughter. I have a semi-succesful business and despite my non-resdency status I am in a better financial position than her& could help more if I can get a work permit or citizenship. What are my options? Can I file for asylum?
