Rock Island, IL asked in Medical Malpractice for Illinois

Q: I went to an optometrist to have eye pain evaluated, and I think he made it worse because I can barely see out of my eye

since that appointment. I know optometrists aren't doctors but do they fall under the purview of medical malpractice law?

A: Optometrists do fall under the Illinois Medical Malpractice Act as a medical provider who does provide the service of a healing art professional under the statute; 735 ILCS 5/2-622, et seq.

A: You need to find out what is going on with your eye and I'm not hearing that you have a diagnosis from an OPTHAMOLOGIST

That is a DOCTOR with training in the treatment of eye problems. An optometrist has little medical training.

Do not ask the opthamologist if you think the optomotrist did anything. Otherwise they'll be worried about being dragged into anything and get distant with you when goal #1 is to get medical (i.e. MD doctor care) for your eye. Get a free consult from a member of the Ill. Trial Lawyers Assn who handles eye issues.
