Q: i rent a house from a property managemnet group and my daughter lives in the house i pay the rent every month
can i claim the rent on my return
A:
If you are looking to claim the Michigan 'home heating credit' or real estate tax "surrogate" credit for rental property, you have to LIVE in the home AND pay rent/mortgage/taxes in order to claim it. You may be able to claim TAXES on a second home if you itemize deductions, but not the 'home real estate tax credit' for rentals on your Michigan tax return.
You MAY be able to claim a dependent deduction if you provide more than 50% of a child's support and they meet other requirements, but you should consult with a tax preparer or lawyer to insure you meet all the requirements.
Don't try to do this without professional guidance however, as you can make a serious mistake that will cost you in excess taxes if you aren't careful.
