Q: My 16 yr Daughter wants to terminate her fathers rights and have my husband adopt her. How hard and costly would this be
Her father has had minimal contact with her in 2years, has only paid $515 in child support since May 2012, the last payment of $100 was in October 2015. He doesnt call her, he did call on her birthday in December. She seen him at Christmas but that wasnt because he tried. She went to her Grandmas and he was there, because thats where he lives now. She said he barely came out of the bedroom. He does have some past drug and dui charges. We have never said anything to my Daughter about doing this. She asked us last night if my husband could adopt her. Do you think we have a good case?
A:
Yes, it appears your child is available for adoption. Sorry I didn't see this question earlier. In my experience, about $2500 is the minimum fee an attorney would charge for adoption, but in your case perhaps a little more, since two cases must be filed. The case to terminate his rights, then the adoption. Good Luck.
