Kent, OH asked in Immigration Law for Ohio

Q: I am a Canadian Citizen in the U.S. since 1957 but lived in Germany for 8 years and am afraid of being deported!?

I came back to visit the U.S. each year but only got permission from the U.S. for the first 5 years I was in Germany because I thought I was going to stay there but came back to U.S. because of my husbands job. He is a U.S. citizen. I have a green card and now want to become a citizen but am afraid I will be in trouble because of the 3 years in Germany without permission. I have been back from Germany for 15 years now. Please help I am so worried.

A: You may want to sit down and review your situation with an immigration attorney. What you described does not sound terribly alarming, even in today's climate. The fact that you have a green card and a US Citizen spouse should be enough to protect you. But, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.
