Q: My military ex boyfriend hurt me and left me on a street, what's gonna happen to him if i report it?
Hello, Im an Italian girl who was in a relationship with an american soldier here in Italy. He was great at first, then as soon as he went on a rotation (no deployment ) he has changed..a lot of anger towards me for no reason..narcissistic behaviour, he did mental games to me, played with me, and a few nights he ago pushed me against walls and i slapped him to bring him back to reality..but he hit me, pulled my hair and pushed me hard on a street and left me there..his buddy was watching without doing anything.. he gives me the fault now..says I did all of that by myself! He told me if i report him he's going to take me to court and win and take all of my family have..also money my mom earn in years.. I don't have visible bruises but a lot of pains on my neck and back..I can't go to the doctor without reporting him..i want him to get help not to loose his job.. What could i do? What's going to happen if i report him??
A:
Depending on the facts and nature of what he did to you, and it sounds like you mean it to be a physical assault of some sorts - if there is a police report, he could be charged in state court of some form of domestic abuse or assault and battery. A state conviction on a domestic abuse would trigger the Lautenberg Act and he would be prohibited from possessing a firearm - even in the military - and he would not be able to carry a firearm/qualify on the range, and could be put out of the military on an administrative discharge. Also, the assault would be the subject of a potential UCMJ action - to include courts-martial or non-judicial punishment.
If you did not make a police report or contact his command, then they would not know or take action. You may also consider filing for a protective order if you feel there could be harassment or further assaults.
A: A follow up, I just saw that this was in Italy - OCONUS - thus it would likely only be handled by the military if there is a police report made to Italian authorities or to military law enforcement.
