Riverview, FL asked in Divorce and Child Support for Florida

Q: Can I ask for travel allowance to see my son when i move to go to college?

i have 50/50 custody rn, I have no child support from my son's father, instead a child support is imputed to me while i attend college full time. Father makes 100K+. Between my savings and student loans, I was able to support me and my son for the past 2 years. I wont be able to do that or afford travel to see my son once I move out of state to continue my education for the next 3 years. I need financial assistance to be able to maintain a relationship with my 9 yo son. Please advise.

A: It is unclear what you mean by "imputed to me". Are you given credit toward the ongoing child support you otherwise would be paying? If so, the answer is "probably not"; how you support yourself and foster your relationship with your child is something you are expected to take care of. You can, of course, ask the court to modify the provisions, but it's not automatically implied in the current arrangement.

A: You need an attorney to protect you. Seriously. He should have to pay your legal fees. I suggest you contact a lawyer immediately, prior to moving. This is too important to try to handle by yourself. I would be happy to speak with you on the phone if you call. 954-776-2320.
