Lansdowne, PA asked in Landlord - Tenant for Pennsylvania

Q: Noise complaints against me.

I am a 66 year old woman living in 3rd floor apartment. My downstairs neighbor keeps complaining I make loud "banging and thumping" noises all the time. I don't think mgmt agrees with her. What can I do? I have put down some mats as the floor boards do squeak, but now I am "tip toeing" around MY OWN apt??? I have asked her to report her complaints directly to management. Is there anything else I should do?? Should she have to verify the noise? How do you disprove excessive noise? Thank you.

A: You don't have to disprove anything. It is up to the individual complaining to prove. Perhaps you can arrange a meeting with your landlord to assist you both in finding a compromised middle ground. I'm not sure what that would be, perhaps not wearing shoes inside. It may seem unnecessary in your own home, but if it helps to keep the peace then that is a small concession to make.
