Des Plaines, IL asked in Child Support for Illinois

Q: What steps do I take to start collecting child support? My son is 11. His dad and I split when he was 2. Never married.

He just got a steady job for the first time, I felt too bad for him to collect support in the past. He only sees his son a couple times a year when I bring him to family birthdays/holidays. Should I talk to his dad first or go through the court? Also, would me collecting child support alter my ability to change my sons last name (his request)

A: File a parentage case in court so child support is taken right out of his check.

Otherwise, you are dependent on him.

A: Go through the dept of human services child support division to have child support established and collected.
