Anniston, AL asked in Landlord - Tenant for Alabama

Q: What forms in which order to be filed against my AL landlord for retaliation and diminishing of necessary services?

To keep this as short as possible, the rundown is this: I will be filing AL form SM-1 against my landlord that will list multiple claims. These mainly relate to his deliberate cutting off of power and water to my unit (which states in the lease will stay in his name since utilities are included in the rent) after weeks of myself and husband begging him to fix a burst water pipe under out trailer, causing more mold, bugs, flooding and limited to no hot water. I've also been on him to finish the repair to a nonworking toilet in my room that was begun six months ago to no avail. After a quick online search about tenant's rights to electricity and water (Google warrior right here), I turned the utilities back on by hand after pointing out the AL code to him in person as well as taping notices on my doors. About 10 days after that, he taped a handwritten notice to vacate on my door for supposed late rent. So what are my guidelines after filing the original complaint against him? Thanks.

A: You should stop trying to play lawyer here and get some legal advice and help. If you stopped paying rent you will be evicted from the trailer. He cannot turn the power off because you don't pay, and you will be able to recover from him if he did that. Remember, you CANNOT engage in self help by not paying the rent. That breaches the rental agreement and you will be evicted.
