Lawton, OK asked in Adoption and Family Law for Oklahoma

Q: My husband wants to adopt my 17 stepdaughter. she consents and her bio dad doesn't care. How do we start? lawyer?

My husband married her bio mom at age 3 and raised her as his own. Her bio dad doesn't care. She wants my husband to adopt her. We want to try and do it ourselves without a lawyer to save on cost especially when she wants it and her bio dad won't care. Her bio mom might have an issue or rather just demand more child support then we already pay for his biological son. My step daughter wants this also because then she is guaranteed time with us with her brother.

A: Unless you really are comfortable with the law and procedure, an adoption is probably not the type of case you should attempt to do yourself. I would encourage you to find an attorney in your local area to assist you.
