Browns Mills, NJ asked in Traffic Tickets for New Jersey

Q: Should I hire a traffic lawyer? I live in Burlington County NJ.

I am trying to figure out if I need a lawyer for traffic court. I was pulled over the other day for talking on my cell phone. I was given a ticket for that(39:4-97.3) and also a ticket for an expired dl(39:3-10A). I have to appear for both tickets. Unfortunately for me, I did the skip the trip for my license and hadn't received it yet. It expired August 31st. As of today, I still do not have it. The fines seem high if I plead guilty. Can a lawyer help me get out of these or have them plead down? I have 0 points on my license and the cell ticket is a first offense. Also, about how much would a lawyer cost? Thank you.

A: I would suggest that you call a local attorney. The fine for unlicensed operation can be as high as $500, and may also carry jail time. The cell phone violation carries a fine of $200 - $400.

Many attorneys offer free or reduced fee initial consultations.

A: The fine is the least of your problems and yes a lawyer will cost more than the fine, BUT you also face up to 60 days in jail if convicted. Obviously your past record will be the biggest factor on whether you get jail, BUT it is not something you should risk without competent counsel. Most of us traffic ticket lawyers offer a free in office consultation, I suggest you at least start with this and then make an informed decision.
