Clearwater, FL asked in Foreclosure for Florida

Q: I lost my job after Hurricane Irma and am worried about falling behind on mortgage payments. My house was also badly

damaged. If it's now worth less than I owe and the bank forecloses, can they come after me to pay for repairs?

A: No, probably not. Didn't they require insurance which would cover such damage?

A: I am sorry for your situation. If your house is insured, you need to make a claim for whatever items or repairs can be reimbursed to you. Many companies are offering assistance to Hurricane Irma victims. I would contact your mortgage company and let them know your situation, they may give you a forbearance for a few months until you can get back on track. You should also apply for unemployment right away until you can find another job. If it comes down to it and the bank forecloses, you will still have time to participate in the foreclosure, mediation and other options. Foreclosure is a process, so don't think that the Sheriff is going to come in and throw your stuff out on the curb. If you are served with a foreclosure Summons, you should contact an attorney to determine the course of action that will be most beneficial to you. Best of Luck! Jennifer
