Q: Hi, I'm having an issue with my immigration papers that I don't quite understand.
I was born in another country but one if not both my parents are and were american citizens when i was born. I researched a bit and learned that under the law of Jus Sanguinis I should automatically become a citizen because of the status of my parents. But at the moment that is not the case and i don't understand why. I'm in the process of getting my citizenship and have to do all the citizen application processes when I believe I shouldn't have to. Is that correct?
A: The acquired and derivative citizenship laws have changed over the years in the United States. You should schedule a consultation with a competent immigration attorney who can evaluate the facts of your case against the applicable law.
