Q: I filed for child support a year and a half ago and I never got a court date. Should I refile or get a lawyer?
I would like minimal custody for the father because he has an abusive past.
A:
You definitely should get an attorney if possible.
You mention custody, but you write that you filed for child support. Did you also file for custody? Because they are usually two separate issues.
If you filed some 18 months ago, and nothing has happened, you should contact the judge's assistant and ask for a specific hearing date and time. You then should send the father written notice of the time set for the hearing and file proof of such service with the clerk of court.
