Q: My mother has a trailer in Naples, FL that was damaged by hurricane Irma, and needs suggestions on what is best to do.
She wants to get out of it, but believes she can’t because the home either needs major repairs or must be demolished and replaced. If she demolishes the home, the size and shape of her lot may prohibit her from replacing it with a home that fits the HOA regulations. She spoke to a manufactured home dealer who gave her a quote of $120,000 for their most basic model that MIGHT fit her lot. This doesn’t include install or repairing or repouring concrete. If she could simply get out of her lease, she would. She also has an $11,000 investment in the HOA that she’s worried about losing. She does not believe simply walking away is an option. They increased the HOA fees by quite a bit last month. She’s currently paying over $300/month for the HOA. Does anyone have any thoughts on how she might get out of this - preferably without her losing the $11,000 investment? This house has become a drain on her bank account and a tremendous source of anxiety.
A: I am so sorry for your mother's situation. FEMA offers disaster relief for Collier County residents. Your mother may be eligible for a grant or low cost home loan to make the repairs needed. I would recommend you research those opportunities for her first. Please Google any company or organization BEFORE engaging any services to be sure they are not a scam. Best of Luck! Jennifer
