Grand Haven, MI asked in Estate Planning for Michigan

Q: trying to make arrangements for my final expenses

I'm trying to donate my cadaver to the U of M, and I want to decree that no funeral is to be held. Furthermore, I want to decree that the mortuary industry is not involved in any way. Thank you in advance.

A: You need to spell this out in BOTH your will (which unfortunately may not be looked at until after a funeral so putting funeral / remains disposition instructions in there alone is NOT enough!) and also in your Medical PoA. Michigan law allows a medical agent to act even after death to arrange for funerals and anatomical gifts and you need to insure you choose someone to do those tasks who you trust will follow through and do what you desire.

Further you SHOULD have these documents done by a local estate planning attorney. There are conditions and caveats that need to be followed. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish -- it will cost less to get this done right up front than to have issues later!
