Philadelphia, PA asked in Landlord - Tenant for Pennsylvania

Q: Can I negotiate a judgement that has been placed against me by a landlord

I recently applied for an apartment and was denied because of this judgement. My last apartment I had slumlord issues and I stopped paying rent and moved out. However I was still being charged rent and now there is a judgement against me. I don’t agree that I should have to pay the full amount due to the fact that I had multiple issues at the apartment when I was occupying it. I really need to get a new place and I need to satisfy this judgement before I do so. Can I please get some help on how to go about this. Thank you

A: The time to contest the issue was when you were sued. Apparently you were, and it sounds like you didn't show up and got a judgment against you. If you didn't know about the case, you need to go to the courthouse or DJ office, look at the filings to see how they claim they served you, then file a motion to reopen the default. You may be eligible for legal aid.
