A: Why is your ex is claiming the child? Is there a court order for him to do this, or have you signed an IRS form to permit this? If not, and you have any income, it's in your best interest to claim the child so you can get a refund from Earned Income Tax Credit. IRS Rules say the person who provides over 50% of support can claim a child.

If more than 1 person claims a child, IRS will catch it.

FYI the Oklahoma DHS website has a link for you to prepare you own taxes free. Try it and see the tax difference if you claim the child.

Other than claiming child or not is the only way your ex can effect your taxes.
