Albany, NY asked in Traffic Tickets for New York

Q: How much does your first ticket impact your insurance rate?

I live in NY and was ticketed for doing 80mph in a 65mph (Interstate). It’s my first offense and I’ve wrote an appeal. I’ve heard that a first offense doesn’t raise your insurance rate. Is this true? I’m on a family plan so getting a 15% increase would be a $600 charge onto our bill.

A: The New York State Department of Financial Services regulations do not permit your insurance company to increase your auto insurance premium for a conviction of 15 m.p.h. or less over the speed limit.

However, when this law was passed every insurance company woke up and started issuing "good driver discounts." They can take away those discounts for a first offense, thus raising your premium.
