Buffalo, NY asked in Landlord - Tenant for New York

Q: Can I request first month rent back along with security deposit if landlord breaks lease after just 16 days?

I moved into an apartment 16 days ago. Today I received a call from the landlord who told me that I have to move out because investors in the commercial property attached to the building do not want renters on the premises. He gave me 30 days to find a new place and offered to give me back the security deposit, but seeing as I haven't even been here a full month and this is suddenly an issue, could I also ask for the landlord to refund me the full months rent, as I'll need the funds to move?

A: You could ask for much more. He cannot evict you without a court order and that would take time to get. Ask for a few thousand.
