A: Where it has been 7 years collection of the debt may be barred by the Rhode Island or Massachusetts statute of limitations. In Massachusetts for credit card debts the limitations period is 6 years. I'm not a Rhode Island attorney but the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is generally considered to require a debt collector to tell you if the debt is barred by the statute of limitations. You should contact them and ask if this is the case. Here is more information on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and time-barred debt : https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0117-time-barred-debts or call a consumer or collection law attorney.
