If you have a US Utility patent, you pay your first maintenance fee in the window that opens 3 years after your patent was issued and closes at 4 years. There are provisions for reviving your patent should you unintentionally fail to pay this maintenance fee. But that requires an expensive fee.
United States Design Patents do no require maintenance fees.
