A: It's your dog, and your boyfriend had no legal right to transfer ownership to anyone else, so the current person(s) in possession of your dog cannot legally have obtained ownership. The conclusion may be different if other facts are present, such as your boyfriend claiming that you either made a gift of the dog to him, thereby transferring ownership, or you abandoned the dog and relinquished your right to ownership. Proving that a completed gift was made, or that you legally abandoned your dog, are factual issues for which your boyfriend (or the people in possession of your dog) would have to prove. However, the length of time that has passed since you turned over your dog may have an impact. If it has been years, you may have a more difficult time proving you did not give away or abandon your dog.
