A: When you file bankruptcy you will need to file a statement of intention about whether you intend to assume or reject your residential lease. If you assume the lease, it means you are going to keep it and you’ll agree to remain bound. If you reject it, then it means you’re going to let the lease go and you won’t be bound.

If you don’t assume the lease and keep paying, your landlord can ask for relief from the automatic stay to begin an eviction.
