Q: Ohio open carry at 18

I’m currently 18 years old living in Ohio I recently moved out and received a pistol as a moving out Gift , I’ve been wanting to carry for protection but the only way I could is if I open carried is this ok ? This is a right isn’t it.

A: Open carry is legal in Ohio. But it carries some legal risks. Most importantly, keep in mind that carrying a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle is against the law. The weapon needs to be unloaded and in a lock box preferably in the trunk anytime you get in the car. Second, various establishments and certain building and institutions do not permit firearms, so pay attention to the signs. Third, your statement that "the only way" you could carry is open raises some concerns. Are you ineligible for a concealed carry permit for some legal reason? If so, are you certain it is legal for you to possess a firearm?
