Fort Worth, TX asked in Family Law and Child Support for Texas

Q: Can I sign over my rights?

I just got child support papers from someone I have not seen in 10 years saying that her 9 year old son is mine. There is another man on the birth certificate and pictures all over facebook with his "dad". She was also married to someone else for 4 years so he has had a father figure in his life. I am not sure what to do but I have a wife and 4 children of my own. If we take a DNA test and it is mine, can I sign over my rights? Or would a judge tell me I cannot do that? I just do not know how this works since she waited 9 years, or does that even matter?

A: You can sign over rights. But, if it is not your child then it would be better off learning that 1st. Then you would not be responsible at all. You should get an attorney in your area to assist you with this as soon as possible. Good luck.
