Lyndhurst, NJ asked in Family Law for New Jersey

Q: What are the legal consequences for lying to a social worker?

My friend was reported to social services because she left her son home alone and because she left one day last year and didnt come back to the next morning so out of concern her boyfriend went to court to file for emergency custody. When she went to court the judge told her she wasn't allowed to be alone with the kids so when her boyfriend went to work at night she néeded someone with her to supervised her. When the social worker came to her house she informed them that I was the one who supervised her at night however this is not the case. The social worker did try to contact me but I have not called him. My friend and her boyfriend say that all the social worker wants to do is talk to me on the phone to confirm I was there. Would be that simple just to call him and all he wants to know if I was there or does he want more information like Can he come to my home and ask my family if I did go out at night? Is he allowed to ask for my address where I work and my social security number?

A: There are no fixed set of consequences, just do not do it. A social worker has broad powers, but if you believe that you are not being treated properly, than you need to contact an experienced matrimonial attorney to discuss the situation in detail, and if applicable bring the matter to the attention of the Court.
