Chicago, IL asked in Civil Rights, Employment Discrimination and Employment Law for Illinois

Q: I asked for a reasonable accommodation for a disability at work, was denied and later reprimanded is that discrimination

A new requirement was added to my responsibilities, I asked for an accommodation for my disability, was told no, and if I couldn’t complete it without an accommodation it would effect my employment... asked again 6 months later, was told no again and that “I just didn’t want to do it” and “why do I keep rehashing this out” the answer is no. I reached out to another manager...I then was required to attend a meeting with my head boss and sales manager in which I was told they were not legally required to assist me and that they would accommodate this time but I need to communicate with multiple managers and HR going forward and upon medical documentation they would consider my requests...following this situation I have required professional assistance to deal with the stress, anxiety and emotional distress. I was then written up the 2 months after the situation and disqualified from obtaining new accounts. I was in good standing before this and received multiple awards for my work.

A: There is no way to answer your question effectively without an appointment (typically several hours long) reviewing the facts and any documents you can supply, investigating the medical condition that causes you to seek reasonable accommodation, etc.
