Q: Is it legal for someone to change the locks and not give me a key when I pay rent to him?
I was told to file a restraining order to make him give a key but he hasn't. I haven't taken my meds for breast cancer or PTSD. My uniforms for work are there at the house. All I have is the dress and sandals I left in. When I went there with the police he literally tossed my lap top and some item out on the porch in a bag. I got upset (because I hadn't taken any medication in 5-6 days) and left. I looked through the bags and my medication wasn't in them. Can I still get my things? I'm so confused about everything and I'm sleeping in my car.
A:
what he did was wrong based on the limited info you provided.
he has to give you 3 days notice to quit and then file an unlawful detainer with the court.
did you call the police and did they say it was civil?
A: No. It is not legal and you have a cause of action against him. Do not sleep on your rights. Act quickly. The police should have had your lanlord open your room for you. Go back to the police and tell them he has not given the key to your apartment and that you need your medicine. Hire a lawyer fast. Best of luck.
