Q: If I'm paying rent does the owner have the right to tell me that I can't have visitors over.

A: Typically, no -- but your written lease should give you the answer. If there's nothing in the written lease concerning visitors, then there's no prohibition on you having guests over.

If the lease is verbal only, I still don't think there's any legal right of the landlord to restrict your visitors. But I suggest that you be reasonable under your particular circumstances. If you're renting a room in a private residence and share a common entrance/exit, it's probably a nuisance for the landlord for you to have guests in and out at all hours of the day and night (and that's a good way for you to get the eventual boot too). Ditto if you're "renting" in your parents' house. Talk to your landlord and work it out.
